Also, Gary Cole's low-key contribution as Rosalee's Hollywood-obsessed dad is pleasingly comic. As Tad's handlers, Nathan Lane and Sean Hayes extravagantly send up the Hollywood mindset. The film will alienate those who don't go along with its assumption that the suitor with right of first refusal is the guy who's lusted after the girl the longest, never mind that she's not had one such thought for him. As it is, there's about as much chemistry between Pete and Rosalee as a glob of flour languishing in a pool of spilled Orange Crush in Aisle 3. Had the filmmakers included even a nanosecond wherein Rosalee trembles when accidentally brushing hands with platonic childhood friend Pete over the recycled-bottle bin, we might think differently. Go, Tad, go! we think, knowing we shouldn't. Tragically for the film, Duhamel's (from TV's Las Vegas) very appeal torpedoes the plot's intention, that we root for someone else to get the girl, namely Grace's geeky and hapless grocery-store manager, Pete, writer Victor Levin and director Robert Luketic's (Legally Blonde) choice of hero.īecause Tad is respectful of Rosalee while Pete crudely and proprietorially keeps admonishing Rosalee to "guard her carnal treasure", it's no contest. How else to explain the filmmakers' demand that we cheer for an ineffectual character played by That '70s Show's weedy Topher Grace when what many will ask after getting an eyeful of the title character will be: who the devil do I have to sleep with to win a date with dishy Josh Duhamel? The strapping 31-year-old is believably cast as Tad, an erstwhile naughty Hollywood star who falls in love with Kate Bosworth's scrumptious West Virginian hick-virgin' Rosalee, when she wins a contest to meet him. Although ostensibly catering to the fairer sex with its title and a shirtless leading man whose pectorals you could skip stones off, Win a Date With Tad Hamilton ! is really that most insidious of Hollywood product: nerd propaganda.
